Once upon a time, I used to work at this nice place in Noida, which was a BPO, but, unlike most BPOs, it did not practice slave labor. In other words, I really enjoyed myself there! The work was good. The food was good. The commute time was minimal. And the HR team was brilliantly creative!
I suppose you are wondering how these yellow flowers are related to this post about my ex-workplace. I'm coming to that... a little patience...
So this creative HR team in that organization used to come up with some really fun contests every now and then, and especially during Diwali! I was lucky enough to celebrate one Diwali at that organization. They had a bay-decoration competition, a traditional-dressing competition, a quiz competition, Lotto, and even a Rangoli competition! I won a cash prize in the quiz, a couple of coffee mugs in the Lotto, and the first prize in the Rangoli, which was a team event. :D
So where do these flowers come in? Yes, in a moment... :D
Apart from the Diwali season, the wonderful HR team also kept organizing smaller contests for us every few months. And one such contest was the "fancy head-dress" competition! Yes, that's where these flowers come into the picture! :p
As soon as I heard "fancy head-dress", images of tropical beauties (Well, my ID - 'miss_teerious' - is inspired by Peter Andre's 'Mysterious Girl'!) crossed through my mind -- girls wearing flower garlands, flower bracelets, and flower anklets, along with their floral head-dress you know... that wreath of flowers & foliage circling their head!
Now once this image got inside my head, it refused to step out again! I tried to think of several other possibilities for a fancy head-dress, but NO! I just had to find that tropical floral ring only! So which market in Noida would sell such a thing? In fact, I doubt if it is sold in any market of India! Ok maybe in Goa... but I was in Noida, remember?
And then suddenly I noticed these bright yellow flowers in their vase, in the corner of the room! And I said to myself - "wait a minute... I can make such a floral head-band at home, with these flowers!"
I also had a kurta in a similar shade of yellow, that I used to wear with white churidaar & white chunni. So it was decided! I would wear a wreath/ring/band/whatever-it-is-called, of these yellow flowers, around my head, with that yellow-and-white dress! My flatmate said I'd gone mad! I reminded her that I was born mad. And then started thinking about how to set these 7 flowers in a circular ring, that would fit my head.
Eventually, my flatmate and I went shopping, to get a white-colored forehead band... the kind girls use to push their hair back when they put on a face-pack, you know. I don't know the official word for it, I'm sure there must be one, but my general knowledge regarding beauty products is nil.
So anyways, it was easy enough to find, and then we came back home, and she helped hold the flowers steady, while I stitched them on to that band one-by-one. Then we stapled the outer petals of adjacent flowers together so they wouldn't hang limp.
And with that home-made contraption in a plastic bag (I wasn't going to wear it in the cab too now!), I reached office. And guess what! Nobody there gave even the remotest hint that we had such a contest going on that day! For a minute I thought I'd got the date mixed up! But then I saw those posters on the notice boards -- the date was correct. It's just that nobody else on the floor had taken this contest as seriously as I had. :|
Have you ever walked into a party and realized you were totally over-dressed?
That's how I felt!
And the best part -- my Team Leader and the Team Leaders of the other teams in that same vicinity, they started pestering me to show them my "fancy head-dress"! I very reluctantly took it out of its poly-bag, and then it changed quite a few hands, and I got to hear several very audible exclamations! And then the questions started pouring in...
"Where did you get this?"
"How can I get one like this?"
"No seriously! You made it yourself!?"
"Will you make one for me too?"
And the most outstanding one was this Surd TL - "Can I take this home after the contest?" :D
Long story short, suddenly everyone on the floor was excited about this contest! People taking early breaks to hunt for colored papers and scissors etc., and some of the guys who had bikes even went off to the market to hunt for something appropriate enough to participate in the contest! Suddenly, everyone's creative juices had started flowing! It was as infectious as a smile!
The final winner though was, of course, 'yours truly'! :p Unfortunately, I do not have any pictures of that floral head-dress. (Yes, I wore that bright yellow floral ring around my head IN THE OFFICE!") Since nobody on the floor had originally planned to participate, nobody had a camera! The HR guys did take a pic of me wearing that 'thing', but later when I asked them about it, nobody could remember who had the camera! :(
This is my ninth post for NaBloPoMo November 2010.
