I never make New Year Resolutions. Know why? It’s because New Year Resolutions are bound to fail. When you make a New Year Resolution, you impose upon yourself a mammoth task for the whole year, or sometimes even for your entire life! Very few people have the strength of will to survive such pressure.
That’s why in our Reiki system, we are only taught to be watchful about “Today”.
Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will show kindness and respect to all living beings.
Just for today, I will live the attitude of gratitude.
When it’s just one day that you have to take care of, then it doesn’t create such a big psychological pressure on you.
I started this NaBloPoMo, with the intent to write 30 posts in 30 days, 1 post per day. It seemed like a Herculean task to me… I was sure I wouldn’t get through beyond one week. And I was right.
One week was soon over, the initial excitement of doing something new had passed, and I was still left with 23 days more to go! “Oh my God! 23 days! That’s not even halfway yet!”
But then I made myself sit down anyway… kept staring at the screen for what seemed like eternity. Then picked up my notebook and pen, went into some other room, and started scribbling something... anything. Eventually a post took shape. I typed it out and published it on my blog. “Today” took care of itself and I decided to worry about the remaining 22 days “tomorrow”!
I have been doing exactly that every day since then. I keep postponing the task throughout the evening. By 8:30 pm, I start staring at my monitor for some inspiration. Nothing flashes. So I go to make dinner eventually, and the idea of leaving this series incomplete starts looking better and better. “13 posts still left! Well it’s less than half now. Yeah, but it’s still in 2-digits man…!”
Eventually I finish off dinner… there’s not enough time left in the day to find an excuse good enough to give up… and on top of everything, now Pooja has told me that reading my blog post at the end of her day has become a part of her daily routine! So I’m left with no other choice, but to just sit down and start writing!
“Let me just get through TODAY for now… and I’ll worry about the rest of the days tomorrow!”
The technique seems to be working… at least for the time being, that is! From the 8th post to the 18th … been taking it just one day at a time! In fact, if you seriously look at this concept, it’s actually pretty neat.
Whatever it is that you want to do… exercise, cut down on junk food, watch less TV, spend more time with family, anything really… you just need to do it TODAY.
It’s like those signs in our shops in India – “Aaj nakad, kal udhaar (cash today, credit tomorrow)”! Now maybe I should add “study for an hour” also to my list of “things to do today”!
